Book Review| Five Point Someone

Author Name: Chetan Bhagat

Description:
Five Point Someone is a story about three friends in IIT who are unable to cope.

The book starts with a disclaimer, “This is not a book to teach you how to get into IIT or even how to live in college. In fact, it describes how screwed up things can get if you don’t think straight.”

Three hostelmates – Alok, Hari and Ryan get off to a bad start in IIT – they screw up the first class quiz. And while they try to make amends, things only get worse. It takes them a while to realize: If you try and screw with the IIT system, it comes back to double screw you. Before they know it, they are at the lowest echelons of IIT society. They have a five-point-something GPA out of ten, ranking near the end of their class. This GPA is a tattoo that will remain with them, and come in the way of anything else that matters – their friendship, their future, their love life. While the world expects IITians to conquer the world, these guys are struggling to survive.

Will they make it? Do under performers have a right to live? Can they show that they are not just a five-point-somebody but a five-point-someone?

My Review:
All my classmates were big fans of this bestselling writer called Chetan Bhagat during my school days and so, as a curious reader I too picked this one up.
So it is about three friends who got admitted into a prestigious IIT and were struggling hard to get good marks and they got screwed up really hard.

What I liked: The movie adaptation Three Idiots. I would really like to thank Chetan Bhagat for this novel. Its because of him that we got such an amazing movie. But what I need to say is that the movie was is really very different from the plot of the book.

What I didn't like: I didn't like the language and structure of this book.
Some really stupid and unrealistic events has been shown as well. It felt quite fake to me that a student, will dare to steal question papers from the office of IIT that too for securing good marks in order to impress the dean of the institution and marry his daughter. Yes that was Hari in this novel. Alok was doing it to get good marks in the exam and Ryan just wanted to have fun.
The author has tried his best to create too much drama but in vein.
I felt as if this book was actually written to be a Bollywood movie script and not a novel.

I don't have much to say about this book. Also I don't recommend it to anyone. Maybe it's only me, as many people loved this book but yeah, in my personal opinion it could have been better.
